Capital House, Edinburgh

A replacement window project for the Capital Building in Edinburgh has involved the installation of Corporate 2000 profiles from Crittall Windows. The building occupies a prominent position on the corner of St Andrews Square and George Street, in the Scottish capital, in the heart of the commercial and financial community.

The task of replacing over 100 windows led to meticulous planning by the architects, Crerar and Partners, to ensure that the 6 week programme was met, and that minimum disruption was afforded to the employees within the building, or to the general public, while building work was in progress.

"There was no site establishment around the building for Crittall," comments architect Julia Laidlaw. "The company were main contractors on the project, and managed to contain all the building work around the location and the working environment, often working throughout the night to install the windows."

All the windows on the 5 storey structure were replaced in a like-for-like programme as dictated by the local planning and Listed Building requirements. The architects wanted as close a match as possible to the 1930s steel originals, and Crittall supplied its Corporate 2000 profiles with only a few millimetres in size difference, enabling the astragal of the windows to be adapted to match the original.

Crittall also refurbished the secondary steel windows from the first to the third floor.

The company's Corporate 2000 profiles enhance the illusion of space as they retain the slender stylingb and narrow sightlines associated with steel fenestration. As the material is so strong, it accommodates the use of large expanses of glass, providing an elegant simplicity with fewer sealed joints, for a smoother appearance. This unobtrusive property enables the architectural splendour of the Grade A listed Victorian building itself to be prominent, whilst fulfilling all contemporary requirements for thermal efficiency and energy conservation.

"This was a complex project due to the positioning of the building," concludes Julia Laidlaw. "However, Crittall were able to complete the project to deadline, and the building now has a completely new set of modern steel windows that replicate the style and character of the originals as much as possible."

The project was completed in 2005 for Standard Life Investment Fund Ltd, and now houses a number of tenants.
