The redevelopment of Hangar 2 at the former Speke Aerodrome Terminal complex is now complete with Crittall Windows supplying a number of its products for the regeneration.

Hangar 2, now formally known as Skyways House, is a £31m office and showroom development, which took 48 weeks to complete. The House is now the headquarters of Littlewoods Shop Direct, comprising 3 levels of offices inserted into the 1942 Grade II* listed aircraft building.

Crittall's W20 profiles were used in 2 ways. Firstly, single glazed panels were used as internal curtain walling, as a glazed wall, and as screens for the liftshafts. To the exterior, double glazed W20 profiles were inserted to match the existing windows within the hangar.

"We specified Crittall W20 to ensure that the bricked-up original openings in the external walls could be reinstated to match the existing glazing," comments a spokesman from the project architects, Comprehensive Design Architects in Manchester. "We then took the opportunity to develop the W20 system in conjunction with Crittall to provide an appropriate glazed curtain wall-type partitioning to key offices and the restaurant, and as a glazed enclosure to the new liftshafts within the building atrium as a key element in a controlled palette of materials, selected to enhance rather than compete with the existing building fabric.

The result of the seven year redevelopment of the overall site is over 100,000 sq ft of modern office space for Littlewoods, and warehouse facilities, hotel, leisure complex and other commercial space. As a measure of the superiority of the redevelopment, Hangar 2 recently won the British Council for Offices Award for Refurbished/Recycled Workspace in their 2006 National Awards.
