A former cricket pitch, Ropers Field Estate was Chingfords first post world war housing estate, established in 1944. The use of steel window frames demonstrated the appeal of very slim section glazing bars which enhanced the high quality construction and appearance of the predominantly semi-detached properties. According to post war records, the specification for Crittall steel frames was made for two reasons: they were neater and more elegant than equivalent frames; and they were also easier to maintain and more weathertight than comparable materials benefits that still prevail in today's contemporary construction practice.

A Crittall respecification ensured replacement windows were all from the Crittall Homelight range and replicate the original with one major difference. Today's Crittall profiles are fully hot dipped galvanised, ensuring resistance from corrosion and rust, a technology that now applies to all steel windows, but which was rare in post war construction.

Crittall's Homelight range is used extensively in residential properties, complementing the architectural style of virtually any dwelling particularly listed buildings or those in conservation areas. The frames are slim and durable, offering considerable strength whilst still maintaining high aesthetic appeal.
