Springfield Mill, Nottingham
W20 profiles have been used extensively on a regeneration project in Nottingham. The double glazed steel profiles were installed at Springfield Mill, located on the banks of the Erewash Canal between Nottingham and Derby.
The development, by City Lofts plc, involves the conversion of the historic old mill into 105 highly specified studios, one and two bedroom apartments, and top floor duplexes.
To maintain the character of the mill and (being a listed building) in keeping with planning restrictions, the decision was made to use the W20 profile from Crittall. The narrow sightlines of the W20 provide visual appeal with no obtrusive mullions or transoms, and they do not detract from the architectural appeal of the historic building. The like-for-like policy dictated the installation of steel windows to maintain the continuity and appearance of the original building.
A spokesman for contractors Jessop Construction Ltd is pleased with the result. "The windows compliment the Victorian architecture whilst incorporating modern developments in window technology, such as double glazing and Pilkington K glass" he comments. The programme to install the windows took only 20 weeks, a major achievement considering there were over 400 windows to be replaced.
