Frequently Asked Questions

Home-owners: new steel windows

Do the Building Regulations affect the installation of steel windows?

All new windows in homes, including their replacement, comes within the scope of Building Regulations. Designed to increase the energy efficiency of buildings, In April 2006 Document Part L of the Building Regulations was revised.

The new Part L applies to all window materials.
It does not differentiate framing materials or specific building components, but the whole window.

This is available from FENSA (Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme at the Governments request in response to the Building Regulations) or from the local Council Building Control.

Reputable window installers including Crittall Distributors (like those registered with FENSA) will know which aspects of the Regulations are applicable to your property.
