Modern property with white facade, featuring crittall steel windows and doors

Now in its sixth year, the Crittall House of the Year Awards celebrate the most exceptional uses of steel-framed windows, doors and internal screens in UK homes. Open exclusively to Crittall’s network of specialist partners, the competition recognises projects that show architectural sensitivity, expert installation and a creative use of Crittall products.

This year’s winning project, a modern renovation in South Yorkshire by KJA Services, impressed the judging panel for its clarity of vision, quality of finish and the transformative role that steel glazing played in shaping the home’s atmosphere.

The project

Katie and Andy had moved into a contemporary house in Sheffield, attracted by the open-plan layout and panoramic views. The space had real potential, with generous walls, exposed brickwork and room for their art collection. But something still felt unfinished.

The answer came during a stay at the Soho Hotel in London. The couple were struck by the extensive use of Crittall glazing throughout the building, noting how it changed the way light moved through the interiors and added a distinctive industrial edge.

“We were blown over by the Crittall windows,” Katie said. “We realised that was what our house was missing. They gave the space presence and personality.”

A partnership that delivered

Crittall put the couple in touch with KJA Services, a Barnsley-based specialist with a reputation for reliability and precision. Katie was impressed from the outset.

“They’re a proper no-nonsense Yorkshire firm. They just got on with it and sorted out any issues quickly.”

The original plan had been modest, with just a few feature windows planned for the main living areas. But once the installation began, the impact was immediate.

“After half a day of the installers being there, we realised we wanted the whole house done,” she said. “It just made such a difference. The more we saw it coming together, the more we knew it was the right decision.”

The final design includes external steel-framed windows and doors throughout the property, along with a bespoke internal shower screen. All the products were specified in RAL 7021 Black Grey, which complements the home’s palette and architectural language.

Working with the space

What impressed the judges was how naturally the steel glazing integrated with the existing structure. The Crittall elements feel like they belong to the original design, enhancing rather than competing with the house’s contemporary character. Large openings frame the surrounding views, while the slim profiles allow light to travel freely through the interior.

For Katie and Andy, the transformation has been remarkable.

“It’s made the house feel special,” said Katie. “The windows are always the first thing visitors comment on. We think it’s the best investment we made during the renovation.”

Why the project stood out

The House of the Year judges praised the project for its confident use of Crittall products and the way it added real character to a previously understated home. They noted the clean installation, the consistency of finish and the homeowners’ willingness to embrace the steel aesthetic across the entire property.
