What Makes Steel Superior for Double Glazing

Steel is up to three times stronger than aluminium, so frames can be slimmer without compromising structural integrity. These slim sightlines increase glass area, improving daylight and views while maintaining excellent insulation with double glazing.

Fully welded corners and hot-dip galvanised steel add stiffness and long-term protection, supporting expansive panes and complex designs with confidence. In short, steel windows combine minimalist aesthetics with serious performance.

Advanced Thermal Performance

Modern Crittall systems integrate a continuous thermal break—typically a polyamide barrier—between inner and outer steel sections. This thermal breaking interrupts conductivity, delivering U-values down to 1.4 W/m²K on W20 TE and as low as 0.8 W/m²K on the premium T60 system, comfortably meeting Part L requirements for existing dwellings.

Double glazing units (16–32 mm) use low-emissivity coatings to reflect heat, argon or krypton gas fills to improve insulation, and warm-edge spacers with robust weather sealing.

The result is stable internal temperatures, reduced draughts and genuine energy efficiency that can trim heating bills without sacrificing the iconic steel aesthetic. Acoustic glass options can further push sound reduction to 40 dB+ for urban sites.

Why Choose Crittall Double Glazed Metal Windows

Authentic steel windows manufactured with precision, fully welded corners and hot-dip galvanised protection deliver robust durability and stable performance. With U-values from 0.8–1.4 W/m²K, acoustic reductions of 40 dB+ and lifespans beyond six decades, these double glazed metal windows balance aesthetics, insulation and security.

Certified performance, recycled content and proven compatibility with building regulations make them a sound, future-ready investment for residential and mixed-use schemes alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand you may have queries about our products and services. We’ve answered some of the most common questions below.

What U-values do Crittall double glazed metal windows achieve, and do they meet regulations?

With thermally broken frames, W20 TE achieves around 1.4 W/m²K and T60 can reach 0.8 W/m²K, comfortably meeting Part L requirements. Performance is enabled by low-E double glazing with argon/krypton gas fills and warm-edge spacers.

Are steel windows suitable for heritage or listed buildings?

Yes—steel’s slim sightlines closely match original profiles, so conservation officers often prefer them when like-for-like appearance is needed. Approval is case-by-case, but Crittall supplies detailed section drawings and glazing bar options (e.g., W20/Homelight) to support applications.

What maintenance and lifespan should I expect?

Frames are hot-dip galvanised and powder coated for long-term protection, delivering a 60+ year lifespan with minimal upkeep. Routine cleaning and occasional lubrication of hinges/locks are usually sufficient; redecoration intervals depend on location and exposure.
