Versatility for Period Properties

These windows suit a wide range of domestic heritage settings:

  • Georgian small-pane façades with fine transoms and mullions.
  • Victorian and Edwardian homes needing slim steel replacements.
  • Art Deco houses with horizontal emphasis and ribbon glazing.

We maintain the rhythm of the original elevation while upgrading comfort and usability. Where sound existing steel remains, we can discuss restoration and sensitive upgrades to retain fabric.

Thermal Performance & Energy Efficiency

Historic windows often suffer from draughts and heat loss. Modern Crittall systems pair thermally improved steel profiles with high-performance double glazing to cut heat transfer and help reduce condensation risk. Slimline units are available for narrow rebates on sensitive elevations. Low-E glass can be specified to meet your Part L target and acoustic needs while keeping sightlines lean. Trickle ventilation and modern seals improve comfort without changing the period look. We survey each elevation and propose glass and frame pairings to balance performance and heritage constraints.

Planning Permission & Conservation Compliance

Conservation area windows and listed building windows often require consent. We help you prepare a strong, heritage-led proposal:

Product data, section profiles and finish samples for conservation review.

Like-for-like replication options for listed buildings (Grades I and II).

Collaboration with your conservation officer before manufacture.

Approved installers handle submissions and site method statements. Designs align with Historic England guidance and current Building Regulations.

Why Choose Genuine Steel for Heritage Homes

Compared with non-steel lookalikes, true steel provides precise, slim modules and crisp arrises that read correctly on period façades. Modern manufacturing adds strength, reliable weather performance and security options, without compromising sightlines. You gain authentic appearance with modern benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand you may have queries about our products and services. We’ve answered some of the most common questions below.

Do I need planning permission or listed building consent?

Often, yes. Homes in conservation areas and listed buildings usually need consent. We supply technical data, section profiles and finish samples to support your case, and your approved installer manages submissions in line with Historic England guidance and Building Regulations.

Will new steel windows match my original profiles?

Yes. We replicate glazing bars, module sizes and opening lights, with putty-effect details to keep sightlines authentic.

Can steel windows meet today’s energy standards?

Yes. Modern thermally improved frames with double (or selected triple) glazing can meet Part L targets, subject to specification.

Can you restore existing steel windows instead of replacing them?

If frames are sound, we can discuss restoration and sensitive upgrades (seals, glazing, ironmongery) to retain original fabric.

Are they secure?

Steel is inherently strong. Modern locking is available, and selected configurations are tested to recognised security standards (e.g. PAS 24). Toughened or laminated glass can be specified.

Who installs them and do I get a certificate?

Installation is carried out by approved partners. Installations can be FENSA-certified where applicable.
